Police say fatally shot criminal was choking Retirement dump

MONTEGO BAY, St James — There should be an improvement in garbage collection in St James and fewer fires at the Retirement dump following the fatal shooting of Jason “Squidly” Gallimore by the police last week. Senior superintendent of police in charge of the parish, Eron Samuels, says Gallimore was a known violence producer who had a vice grip on the area of the Retirement dump. “Members of the NSWMA (National Solid Waste Management Authority) must be happy because that particular individual really wrought havoc in the dump area,” Samuels told last Thursday’s regular monthly meeting of St James Municipal Corporation. “[We] should also see a lot of increase in garbage collection because, maybe they never wanted to say it, but he was creating havoc in the dump which caused a bit of a scare with some of the members of NSWMA,” he added. The senior cop said Gallimore also had a hand in the frequent fires at the dump which routinely blanketed several communities with thick smoke. “He was also responsible for the lighting of the dump on many occasions, the intelligence that we have stated that,” Samuels said. “We are really happy that we should see some ease in the operational activity,” he added. Retirement dump has seen a fair share of eyebrow-raising incidents in recent months. In June, the body of a man was found there. Days later, four men, including a father and son, were fatally shot by a police team. The police reported that members of the security forces came under attack and returned fire. Two illegal firearms were seized during the encounter. During Thursday’s wider update on policing activity within the parish, Samuels highlighted the success of their latest operation in Mount Salem last Wednesday. He said that during a confrontation with police personnel, “violence contributor Romario ‘Jerry’ Brown“ was fatally shot after he allegedly confronted a team on patrol on Crawford Street. A firearm was recovered during the incident. However, police personnel did not come away unscathed. “Three members of the security forces were shot, two more serious than one. One, he received injuries to his leg and also his shoulder, he is currently still in the hospital [and] should be released shortly,” Samuels revealed. “The other received a graze to his head and the third person, a female, she was shot to the chest but her vest and her iPhone cellphone took the brunt of the damage. Fortunately, she was not seriously injured, also had a graze,” he added.
