Portmore United revive Caribbean Cup hopes with 2-0 win over Cavalier

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Portmore United got a lifeline in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup after beating Cavalier FC 2-0 in their all-Jamaica Group B encounter at the National Stadium on Thursday. It was Portmore United’s first win in the revamped competition and it took them to three points from two games. They sit third in the group behind leaders Salcedo FC on five points from three games and Ciboa FC on four points from two games. Cavalier FC, who have yet to score a goal in three games, slipped to fourth place on two points from three games, with defending champions Mt Pleasant FA at the foot of the table on one point. Portmore United, who had lost their opening game to Salcedo FC 2-1, outplayed Cavalier FC for most of the game and were deserved winners. Jevaughn Grant put Portmore into the lead when he headed a cross from Rashaun Small past Cavalier FC goalkeeper Taywane Lynch in the 14th minute. Javier Brown, who had scored in their first game, confirmed all three points when he scored in the 88th minute. After a Cavalier defender made a goalline save following a run from Tedj Bryan, the ball fell to Brown just outside the 18- yard box and he curled a left- footed shot high into the far top left corner.   — Paul A Reid
