NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Jay-Z had a vision for his Super Bowl halftime show as he explained why the rapper finally accepted the gig.
Goodell discussed the decision during an October 27 interview with Ebro Darden and Eddie Francis on Apple Music’s “The Ebro Show.”
He said Jay had put off the performance before telling him, “I wanna do it this year. I think he’s already got his vision; he already understands what he wants to do,” Goodell said.
The commissioner linked the timing to Jay’s anniversary year, completed tour and the Los Angeles setting.
The booking will bring him back to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on February 14, 2027. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced the headlining slot on October 26.
It will be his first Super Bowl halftime performance after years of helping shape the event for other artists.
In the official announcement, Goodell said he had asked Jay to perform when the league first agreed to work with Roc Nation. He left the timing to the rapper. Their partnership began in 2019, with Roc Nation taking a role in the NFL’s music entertainment.
That work will continue while its founder performs.
Roc Nation will executive produce the Super Bowl LXI halftime telecast and serve as strategic entertainment advisor for the live show. Hamish Hamilton will direct it. The game will air on ESPN, ABC and Disney+, with mobile viewing through NFL+.
SoFi also hosted the 2022 halftime show, when Dr. Dre led a lineup that included Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar.
The return to SoFi follows Jay’s October 23 and 24 anniversary concerts there.
Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Too $hort joined the final night, while Friday’s guests included Scarface, John Legend and DJ Khaled. Blue Ivy Carter also played piano during her father’s first show.
Those concerts celebrated 30 years of Reasonable Doubt and 25 years of The Blueprint.
The run took Jay through New York, London and Paris before finishing in Los Angeles. At Saturday’s finale, he also honored Nipsey Hussle with an on-screen tribute and worked the late rapper’s music into the set.
