Russell Brand was convicted of rape and three sexual assaults in London and taken into custody ahead of sentencing.
A jury at Southwark Crown Court returned the four guilty verdicts Thursday after more than eight hours of deliberations across two days, according to The Associated Press.
The British comedian and actor was acquitted of two other rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault. The case involved six women and allegations that stretched from 1999 to 2009.
Judge Joel Bennathan refused bail and remanded Brand in custody. The judge said Brand faces a “significant” prison term when he is sentenced Monday, November 9.
Brand, 51, denied every charge. He testified that he had lived a promiscuous life but had never forced anyone into sexual activity. He told the court, “My entire life has been consumed by these events, these allegations, these accusations.”
Prosecutors argued that Brand used his growing fame and status to target women. The guilty verdicts covered one rape and three sexual assaults committed between 2004 and 2009 at locations that included his home, a radio station and a recording set.
The Metropolitan Police said investigators spoke with more than 100 witnesses, took more than 400 statements and reviewed over 1,400 documents while rebuilding events that happened years earlier.
“Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women,” Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said after the verdict.
The investigation began after allegations were reported by Channel 4’s Dispatches, The Times and The Sunday Times in September 2023. The women in those reports were not the complainants in this criminal trial.
Two additional charges were authorized in December 2025 after separate reports involving alleged incidents in 2009. The Crown Prosecution Service said at the time that those reports concerned two other women.
Police said two further rape allegations remain under investigation. Detective Inspector Laura Nelson, who led the case, told Reuters, “My opinion is that he is a sexual predator and he has abused his power throughout his career.”
Brand rose through British stand-up, television and radio before appearing in Hollywood films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. He later built a large online following around politics, wellness and religion.
His sentence will turn the jury’s verdict into the court’s final punishment. Until then, Brand remains in custody and the separate police investigations remain open.
