News Americas Now, NY, NY, Sat. Oct. 17, 2026: The Mighty Sparrow funeral at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on Friday, Oct. 16th, was true to form with his music doing what it has done for generations – bringing people together for one last farewell to Dr. Slinger Francisco.

At his state-assisted funeral, the mood outside the venue and along the procession route wasn’t grief so much as remembrance, pride, and a distinctly Carnivalesque celebration, drawing local fans, Caribbean devotees, and admirers from further afield. Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley was among the regional leaders who traveled to Trinidad to pay her respects, underscoring how far beyond Trinidad and Tobago’s borders Sparrow’s influence reached.

Rural Development and Local Government Minister Khadijah Ameen said the government’s decision to host a state-assisted funeral reflected Sparrow’s reach across generations and his role in carrying Trinidad and Tobago’s culture to the world. Tobago Chief Secretary Farley Augustine pointed to the Grenada-born Sparrow’s career as a case for investing further in the country’s cultural talent.

Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles said she regretted missing the earlier procession, as she was delivering her response to the 2027 Budget in Parliament, but joined fellow Opposition MPs Hans Des Vignes and Kareem Marcelle at NAPA to pay tribute. “I missed the procession, because I feel that’s where you get the real excitement, but I’m happy to be here,” Beckles said. “When you listen to his calypsoes, the impact is not just culture. It’s finance, it’s sports, it’s CARICOM. It’s just about everything.”

Schools across the country sent students to the farewell, including Northeastern College, Holy Name Convent Port-of-Spain, St Mary’s College, and St Francois Girls’ College. “We are a very musically inclined school and Sparrow represents what our country needs, which is resistance, our identity,” said Kamron Gayah, a French teacher at Bishops Anesty High School East. “In the month of October too, it is Patois Month and he has sung in Patois too, so we are grateful to be here.”

But it was members of the calypso and wider Caribbean music fraternity who spoke most intimately to the depth of Sparrow’s influence. Among the artistes in attendance were Super Blue who sang “Joy In My Soul,” Crazy Show Wayne Winchester, David Rudder, Terri Lyons, Kurt Allen, Iwer George, Machel Montano who sang “Almighty King Of Calypso’ with Kernal Roberts and Sharlan Bailey, John Michael Alibocus (Makamillion), Joel “Zan” Feveck, Helon Francis, Leydon “Lord Organiser” Joseph and the Trinidad and Tobago police band. Guyanese singer Eddy Grant also offered a message at the funeral and condolences to the family, while revealing he also lost his own brother, Rudy in September.

Former calypso monarch Ta’zyah O’Connor, who performed at the funeral, called it an honour to pay tribute to the legendary performer, noting that she and Sparrow shared a distinction – both won the calypso monarch title at age 20, among the youngest ever to do so. “It’s sad, very sad that the Mighty Sparrow had to leave us, but you know how it goes,” O’Connor said. “But every path of my career is influenced by Sparrow. He was such a great calypsonian. Not only calypsonian, but performer and entertainer. We can’t really box him into calypso because that man was versatile.”

For Kernal Roberts, son of the legendary Lord Kitchener, the farewell stirred deeply personal memories. “It takes me back to 26 years ago, when my dad passed. Similar vibe. Sending off a king. I’m really honoured to be part of this,” Roberts said. His daughter Karen Francisco paid tribute in song to her father with a powerful rendition of “My Way” and then did a duet with Samuel Thomas, Jr. on “Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart.”

Fellow former calypso monarch Helon Francis reflected on the near-impossible task of picking a favorite from Sparrow’s vast catalogue — itself a testament to a body of work that has carried generations of Trinbagonians through Carnival and everyday life. “He was the greatest of all the calypsonians,” Francis said. “He was the greatest of all of us. He had all the attributes it takes to be an absolute superstar.”

From the national farewell at Independence Square to the people’s procession down Frederick Street and the ceremonial send-off at NAPA, Trinidad and Tobago gave Sparrow exactly the kind of goodbye the self-proclaimed “Calypso King of the World” built his life performing — one with the whole country dancing along.
