Skilla Baby says getting shot changed his relationship with the streets so profoundly that he can joke about having the “gangster” literally shot out of him. Deep.
Sometimes the universe whispers. Sometimes it screams. And sometimes, bullets do the talking. 3
The Detroit rapper recently spoke about surviving a shooting and how the experience reshaped his priorities. He delivered the message from his car. Skilla Baby offered real perspective.
“They shot the gangster out of me,” Skilla said. “For real, they shot the gangster out of me, baby. They did.”
Funny, not funny.
Skilla Baby survived a shooting in the Detroit area in May 2025 after facing death. Now, more than a year removed from the incident, he sounds like somebody who has reconsidered exactly what being connected to the streets is worth.
“I want to be happy,” he said. “I ain’t no street nothing. I don’t do nothing street. I walk in the street and I get back on the sidewalk.”
This is serious. This is also the latest protégée of 50 Cent. The irony is palatable.
Hip-Hop has always wrestled with the tension between street credibility, toughness and survival. Skilla Baby wants no smoke.
“I support God,” he said.
He also emphasized his desire to remain independent and live according to his own convictions.
“I ain’t really with nobody having control over me,” Skilla said. “I live my own life.”
He’s also got Nas in his corner, which is dope.
There is no cookie for remaining committed to street activities that could eventually kill you. There is also nothing gangster about refusing to evolve.
Skilla Baby understands that now.
Stay safe out there.
