Stevie Wonder’s Ex Alleges Manipulation

Stevie Wonder‘s former fiancee Carmen Efferson accused him of breaking a promise to give her the home at the center of their eviction fight.

She called him a “gaslighter and a manipulator” in a Daily Mail interview reported by The Blast. Efferson said she paid for major repairs despite owing no rent and challenged his image as a community benefactor. Her account put repair bills at hundreds of thousands of dollars, including work after the 1994 Northridge earthquake and flooding. She claimed gift-tax concerns delayed a promised deed transfer.

Wonder’s charity work has included House Full of Toys, an annual benefit for children, struggling families and people with disabilities. AllHipHop previously reported that he canceled four planned December 2025 shows at Hollywood’s Fonda Theatre because there was too little time to prepare.

He addressed that cancellation on KJLH, his Los Angeles radio station, and pledged to donate money himself. The concerts would have marked the fundraiser’s 26th year. At the time, he also said he intended to bring the event back the following year.

The Blast also cited someone close to Wonder who told the Mail that safety for Efferson and neighbors drove the dispute.

The singer sued Efferson in Los Angeles Superior Court on October 22, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY. Its report described a three-bedroom Hollywood Hills house she has occupied since 1988 under what the complaint called an oral, rent-free arrangement.

The filing put access to the house at the center of the case. It accused Efferson of blocking an inspection needed to maintain insurance. Wonder’s lawyers said the home had been uninsured since August 4.

Emails described in USA TODAY’s reporting showed the standoff had escalated in July. Efferson said she felt harassed and withheld consent for anyone to enter. Attorney David Huff warned that Wonder had directed his lawyers to begin eviction proceedings if access remained blocked.

She received notice to leave by August 27 but stayed, according to the filing. Wonder asked the court to remove her and sought $600 in damages for what his lawyers called “malicious and obstructive behavior in preventing the lawful protection of the Property.”
