Tee Grizzley says a trip to Mexico for his son’s birthday ended with three days in jail, $70,000 gone and the party happening without him.
The Detroit rapper described the ordeal during a Cover Lines conversation with B.Dot. Tee said he had traveled with his wife and son when authorities found the cash in a bag.
He maintained that he had forgotten the money was there. According to his account, officials counted it, told him the matter would go to court and placed him in handcuffs.
His wife took their son away before the arrest unfolded in front of him. Tee said the timing made the detention especially painful: “The day of his party, bro, I’m still in there. And they jails over there. That ain’t where you want to be for three days.”
The interview gave Tee room to separate the Mexico episode from the older cases attached to his name. This time, the stakes he described were immediate and personal: getting back to his family, recovering the cash and dealing with a birthday he could not attend.
The episode also became music.
Tee’s album They Forgot, released September 25 through 300 Entertainment, includes a record titled “Locked Up In Mexico.” The 16-track project arrived as he was speaking more openly about the legal problems that once complicated his career.
In August, Tee celebrated having his felony record cleared.
“Every felony GONE!!!! Thank you God,” he wrote before telling supporters, “Your comeback can be greater than your setback.”
The update carried practical weight for an artist who said his record had restricted touring and business opportunities.
His Mexico story is different: it is a new account of a short detention rather than another chapter in those old Michigan cases.
For now, Tee has framed the experience through the interview and the song, with no independently reported ruling resolving what became of the $70,000.
