Donald Trump called the idea of Nicki Minaj becoming White House press secretary a good one, giving his own answer after members of his team floated the rapper for the job.
The president addressed the suggestion in an interview with political commentator Benny Johnson. He said he would think about it but did not announce an appointment, according to Parade.
“That’s a good idea. I think I’ll have to think about that,” Trump said, according to TMZ. He also suggested Johnson for the role.
The answer put Trump himself into a conversation that had already moved from an Air Force One video to political reactions. His comments stopped short of offering Minaj the job or confirming that she would take over White House briefings.
The earlier talk followed her exchange with White House communications director Steven Cheung. In a video he posted October 25, Cheung questioned Minaj aboard Air Force One about the economy, polling and Trump’s campaign workload.
Cheung followed up by floating Minaj for the White House role in the message he posted with the video. Minaj was traveling with Trump to a Michigan rally and praised the amount of work he put into campaigning.
She shared Cheung’s post and tied her support to Trump’s business background. Minaj said his recovery from financial problems gave her confidence in his ability to manage the country’s finances. She also praised his stamina and his efforts to get other Republicans elected.
The staffers’ earlier suggestion had already drawn a response from California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office: “We can only pray.” That reply concerned the staff-generated job talk before Trump’s interview response.
Minaj’s involvement with the administration has also included small-business promotion. As AllHipHop previously reported, she appeared with Small Business Administration chief Kelly Loeffler during a September interview with Laura Ingraham. Minaj joined Grant Cardone and Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia as judges for the Million Dollar Pitch Competition, which offered a $1 million prize.
At the October 25 rally in Port Huron, Michigan, she urged voters to back Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterms. She also pledged to support Trump if he ran again.
