Trump Says White House Is Looking At FBI Probe Of Nolan Wells’ Death

Donald Trump says his administration is weighing an FBI investigation into Nolan Wells‘ death after the teen’s family demanded federal answers.

Asked Wednesday whether he would push the bureau to investigate, Trump told reporters at the White House, “Well, we’re looking at that. Yes, we are.”

His answer left open whether agents would launch a separate probe or receive a formal request from the president.

The response came after Wells’ family held a Monday news conference in Inglewood, California, with attorney Ben Crump.

Crump welcomed Trump’s words but said the family still wants a full investigation into his death.

“Our team stands ready to work with the federal government to ensure Nolan’s death is investigated to the fullest extent,” Crump said in a statement Wednesday.

Wells, 18, disappeared during a July 4 trip with friends to Horn Island, where authorities found his body two days later. At the news conference, his mother, Christine Wonsley, rejected a Mississippi grand jury’s decision not to charge anyone.

“I cannot take that ruling, and I cannot move on with my life,” she said. Wonsley said conflicting accounts of the day Wells vanished still trouble her family, which wants investigators to revisit the case.

His father, Elmore Wonsley, pointed to the island’s federal status as he urged the FBI to take a closer look. “Our son was found on federal land and we are asking the FBI to step in and do a full investigation,” he said.

The family has challenged the suggestion that Wells drowned, citing injuries to the back of his head and unanswered questions about his final hours.

Both the state medical examiner and a pathologist hired by the family classified his cause and manner of death as undetermined.

A Jackson County grand jury found the evidence consistent with drowning but said it did not support charges against anyone who traveled to the island. District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath also said investigators found no evidence that Wells’ death was racially motivated.

The FBI had assisted local investigators, but Trump’s remarks did not announce a new, independent federal investigation.

Lawmakers have asked the National Park Service to investigate Wells’ death on Horn Island, which is part of a federally managed seashore.
