Twista’s Federal Tax Sentencing Reportedly Delayed Until 2027

Twista will apparently have to wait a little longer to find out whether he will serve prison time in connection with his federal tax case.

The legendary Chicago rapper, whose real name is Carl Mitchell, was originally scheduled to be sentenced on October 22, 2026, after pleading guilty to five misdemeanor counts of willfully failing to pay federal income taxes.

However, according to federal tax attorney Rick Yandle, the sentencing has been postponed twice and is now reportedly scheduled for January 20, 2027.

The reason for the reported delays has not been independently confirmed. The revised date also has not been verified through the latest federal court docket.

Twista’s legal troubles stem from his failure to pay federal income taxes over multiple years, specifically from 2019 through 2023.

According to federal prosecutors, the rapid-fire rapper earned substantial income during that period but failed to satisfy his federal tax obligations.

As part of his plea agreement, Twista agreed to pay $441,059.91 in restitution.

Although the charges are misdemeanors, the potential consequences are serious. Each count carries a maximum sentence of one year in federal prison, meaning Twista theoretically faces up to five years behind bars if the maximum penalties were imposed consecutively.

Yandle’s analysis indicates that the estimated advisory sentencing range is 12 to 18 months. However, that range is not a guarantee of incarceration, and the judge retains discretion when determining the appropriate punishment.

The case represents an unusual legal chapter for one of Chicago’s most respected Hip-Hop figures.

Twista, who rose to national prominence through his lightning-fast delivery, became a household name with hits like “Slow Jamz” featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx, as well as “Overnight Celebrity.” His influence on Midwest Hip-Hop and rapid-fire lyricism has endured for decades.

The reported postponement means the veteran MC could enter 2027 with his legal future still unresolved.

The Internal Revenue Service’s public announcement continues to identify October 22 as the original sentencing date, while Yandle’s published analysis points to the January hearing.

For now, no sentence has been publicly confirmed, and it remains unclear whether Twista will ultimately receive incarceration, probation or another penalty.
