Questions surround the management of Jamaican forward Dujuan “Whisper” Richards following his season-long loan switch from English Premier League club Chelsea to EFL League One side AFC Wimbledon. Social media reports and online speculation have circulated claiming that the 20-year-old Reggae Boy has parted ways with long-time agent Craig Butler and Phoenix Sports Management. The rumours suggest that representation duties have shifted to his father, Odile Richards, of Richies and Royals Sports Management. The Jamaica Observer sought clarification from Odile but calls were rejected and a message sent via WhatsApp went unanswered. However, when contacted directly, Butler firmly refuted the claims, maintaining that his agency still holds a contract with the young striker. “Whisper has a contract with Phoenix Sports Management,” Butler told the Observer. “Him doe leave, a we put him weh him deh right now. That talk about him leaving is not true.” Addressing online comments concerning Richards’ demeanour during his official unveiling photos and videos at AFC Wimbledon, where some fans speculated he appeared unhappy, Butler says that the loan was a tactical move to secure necessary pitch time. “We put him in a club where he can get the playing time that he needs right now, because what he needs is first-team football and playing first-team football,” Butler said. “So we put him at that club where he is now, and he will get the playing time that he needs. He just needs to perform, focus on football, and he will be fine.” Butler acknowledged the mental adjustment required for young talent managing early expectations, framing the League One campaign as a crucial stepping stone. “I think that Whisper is young; however, with youth and early quick success, sometimes it can be challenging,” he said. “However, he’s a professional, and he’s a professional footballer. Therefore, he has to adapt, he has to put in the work, and I think that he will focus. Sometimes you have to take a step backward to take 10 forward. So this is not, for me, more than an opportunity for him to play and perform and show the world what we all know he can do.” Despite the conflicting reports surrounding the agency status, the national governing body has not received formal notification of a management change. Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) General Secretary Gregory Daley confirmed that the JFF has received no correspondence from either Richards or his father regarding a shift in representation. The move to Wimbledon comes as Richards seeks to rebuild momentum after an interrupted 2025-26 season. After overcoming a knee injury, Richards scored two goals in 11 Premier League 2 appearances for Chelsea’s Under-21 side. He secured a loan move to Championship side Leicester City in February 2026, where opportunities proved hard to come by, making just four substitute appearances across all competitions without scoring. At the international level, Richards registered four appearances and scored one goal for Jamaica during the 2025-26 season, including a strike against Bermuda in World Cup qualifying. He joins AFC Wimbledon aiming to secure regular starting minutes in England’s third tier.
