VP Records honours Lieutenant Stitchie, Mighty Sparrow

VP Records has joined Jamaica, the Caribbean and the global music community in mourning the passing of two extraordinary cultural figures: Lieutenant Stitchie, OD, born Cleveland Laing, and Slinger Francisco, known worldwide as Mighty Sparrow, the “Calypso King of the World”. Affectionately known as “The Governor”, Lieutenant Stitchie was a gifted lyricist, educator and man of faith whose unmistakable delivery, sharp wit and disciplined artistry helped shape dancehall during one of its defining eras. His transition to gospel reggae reflected the deep conviction and sense of purpose that guided both his music and his life. VP Records said it is deeply honoured to have been part of his musical journey through the release of his 1995 album, Gangsta, which remains an important part of our history and Jamaica’s rich cultural legacy. For his part, Mighty Sparrow elevated calypso through his commanding performances, unforgettable melodies and fearless social commentary throughout a career spanning seven decades. His extensive body of work captured the humour, struggles and spirit of Caribbean people while introducing calypso to audiences around the world. VP Records said it was honoured to help preserve and share portions of his extraordinary catalogue through several releases and reissues, allowing new generations to experience the brilliance of one of the Caribbean’s most important cultural voices. “We convey our deepest heartfelt condolences during this profoundly difficult time to his wife, Sophia, and his entire family. Our sympathies to his friends, colleagues, fellow artistes, and fans around the world who are mourning this tremendous loss of the Governor,” said Chris Chin, chief executive officer of VP Music Group, in a tribute to Lieutenant Stitchie. Reflecting on Mighty Sparrow’s legacy, Chin added: “Mighty Sparrow was a giant of Caribbean music and a true cultural institution. He understood the power of calypso to make people dance, laugh, think and confront the realities of society, all within the same song. His voice and influence will live on for generations.” Lieutenant Stitchie died at hospital on Monday, just one day before he would have celebrated his 61st birthday, while Mighty Sparrow died peacefully in New York on Sunday following a brief illness, surrounded by loved ones.
