PORTLAND, Jamaica — Staff and students of Norwich Primary School in Portland braved Friday morning’s drizzle to honour longtime traffic warden Lynden “Oney” Swaby for his more than 15 years of dedicated service to the school community.
Swaby, who has spent over a decade and a half safely guiding students, teachers and other pedestrians across the road, was recognised as the school’s “local hero” in appreciation of his unwavering commitment.
Vinette Edwards said the recognition was well deserved, noting that Swaby has consistently gone above and beyond in carrying out his duties.
“He has been doing an incredible job among us,” Edwards said, explaining that the school had initially planned to honour him during Heroes Week but he was unavailable.
Vice-principal Dennis Graham, who presented Swaby with a plaque and gift basket, praised his selfless service to the school and wider community.
“You’re our unsung hero who has been giving service to this school and community over the years unselfishly, and we do appreciate you. Norwich Primary wants to say thank you for your years of service to our children,” Graham said.
Students also joined in the tribute, performing a song titled Oney, which highlighted Swaby’s dedication and commitment over the years.
