Wet Music Festival paints waterfront
DOWNTOWN Kingston’s waterfront became a playground of paint, foam, and water as hundreds of revellers welcomed daylight in a spectacularly colourful fashion at the Xodus Wet Music Festival on Saturday. Staged at Port Spectrum, the cooler-friendly event brought rum, food, and infectious Caribbean rhythms together for a morning in which where drenched was part of the pleasure and leaving spotless was practically impossible. The venue was already full by 4:00 am, with patrons ready to surrender to the music. As dawn gave way to daylight, the party revealed its full palette — paint-covered bodies, foam-flecked hair, and smiling faces that wore the evidence of a thoroughly good time. Some revellers were so completely coated in blue that they could have passed for a delegation from the Smurfs’ village; although this crew had swapped mushroom houses for coolers and came armed with considerably more waistline action. DJs Zess, Rico the DJ, Nocturnal, Fatalic, Banka, and Tonio kept the waterfront moving, supplying the soundtrack for hours of dancing as water, paint, and foam added fresh excitement to the festivities. A mini dance-off between two women, one Jamaican and the other Trinidadian, brought a playful dose of island rivalry to the celebration. Their friendly showdown added to the vibes, capturing the Caribbean camaraderie running through the event. “Between the music, the paint, and the water, I had the best time. I came to enjoy myself, and Xodus gave me every reason to stay until the very end,” one female patron told the Jamaica Observer. There was plenty to keep appetites satisfied, too. Foska, Elle & Vire, KFC, and Pizza Hut provided complimentary food, while Janga’s sold meals of jerk, allowing patrons to refuel before returning to the revelry. “The vibes were strong from early, and they never dropped. Good music, food, and everybody enjoying themselves. That is what made the morning for me,” a male patron added. At exactly 10:21 am, soca artiste Lyrikal stepped onstage, joining a party that was already in full swing. His arrival gave fans another reason to keep the energy flowing. His performance included favourites Look Back, Judgmental, Happy Place, and Dip and Roll, bringing a live dimension to the morning’s musical offerings. Amid the celebration, Lyrikal also paid tribute to late soca star Ricardo Drue, performing selections from his catalogue, including Professional. The tribute made room for remembrance while keeping Drue’s music woven into the Carnival spirit he helped shape. Even the advertised 11:00 am finish could not quite contain the festivities. The party continued for approximately another halfhour, with Fatalic keeping the momentum going and ensuring female patrons had ample opportunity to enjoy themselves during the closing stretch. The event came just days after Xodus launched its 2027 costumes under the theme Reign, carrying that excitement from the costume unveiling into a waterfront celebration bursting with colour and Caribbean flavour. The morning ended perfectly with a downpour, giving the paint-splashed revellers one final soaking, and the event a cooling finish.
