Will Smith joined the crowd while Animals As Leaders played at Willow’s birthday celebration, with footage from the private Halloween gathering showing the rapper enjoying his daughter’s choice of live music, according to Louder.
Drummer Marco Cirigliano shared the clip on Instagram. Louder described Smith smiling, jumping and bumping into other guests as the instrumental metal trio performed. The outlet reported that Cirigliano identified the occasion as Willow’s 26th birthday, which fell on October 31.
Willow first became widely known for her 2010 single “Whip My Hair,” but her later work moved through pop-punk, heavier rock and jazz.
Willow had already connected with the band’s guitarist, Tosin Abasi. In August, she posted photos of the pair trying the double-neck guitar and bass associated with Angine de Poitrine, Louder reported.
Her interest in heavy music also ran through the family before her own rock records. Her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith, formed Wicked Wisdom in 2002. Willow later made her own place in the genre with Coping Mechanism, her 2022 album that drew on punk, grunge and metal.
She described that range during a Guitar World interview about the record. “We all love pop-punk, it’s beautiful and amazing,” Willow said. “But let’s not forget the metal, thrash and classic rock.”
The singer also spoke about the women who helped make space for her. In a Vanity Fair interview previously covered by AllHipHop, she described women of color playing rock as part of a “beautiful lineage.”
“We’ve been silenced for a long time, and that’s ending,” she said.
Animals As Leaders released Parrhesia in 2022 and were working on a follow-up. The band is a three-piece instrumental group, with Abasi joined by guitarist Javier Reyes and drummer Matt Garstka.
Her releases this year continued that musical exploration. February’s Petal Rock Black was followed by The Thread in July. The latter reunited Willow with producer Chris Greatti, who had worked with her on Coping Mechanism and 2024’s Empathogen. It was her second album of 2026 and her eighth solo record. Its opening track, “She’s My Religion,” featured acoustic guitar, choral voices and percussion, keeping her exploration of sounds beyond pop-punk in view.
