YELAWOLF & SKYNNY ROGERS: WHO COPIED WHO?
Originally published by AllHipHop Read the original
Skynny Rogers has been generating serious attention with his record “Ain’t My Fault,” but now the independent artist is getting attention for another reason. Just weeks after Skynny Rogers’ music video began making its rounds, Yelawolf released the video for his new song “My Country” and some of the similarities between the two videos are hard to ignore.
That alone might be written off as coincidence. But considering the two artists know each other and have exchanged words on social media, the timing makes the situation even more interesting.
So is it simply coincidence or did Skynny Rogers influence what came next?
Originally from Florida and now based in Nashville, Skynny Rogers has been building his name with a distinctive image, Southern attitude, and authentic approach to hip-hop. More importantly, Skinny Rogers appears focused on creating more than music. He’s developing a recognizable brand and movement around himself and his record “Ain’t My Fault.”
Yelawolf, meanwhile, has spent years establishing his own identity by combining Southern hip-hop with elements of rock and country. The Alabama-born rapper gained national recognition after signing with Eminem’s Shady Records and releasing records including “Till It’s Gone” and “Best Friend” featuring Eminem.
But this time, it’s Yelawolf’s visuals that have people asking questions.
His recently released video for “My Country” contains several visual elements that appear noticeably similar to those seen in Skynny Rogers’ “Ain’t My Fault” video, which had already been circulating before Yelawolf’s video was released.
That’s where the story gets interesting.
Because the two are familiar with one another and have previously interacted on social media, it raises an obvious question: Did Yelawolf see “Ain’t My Fault” and take inspiration from what Skynny Rogers was doing? Or could the similarities be intentional, possibly even a subtle response to the apparent tension between the two artists?
There’s no proof that anyone copied anyone, and similar creative concepts can certainly happen independently. But there is one thing that’s becoming increasingly clear: Skynny Rogers is getting people’s attention. Whether the similarities are coincidence, inspiration, trolling, or something else entirely is for viewers to decide.
