Yung Miami Questions MTV VMAs After “Spend Dat” Song Of Summer Snub

Yung Miami has a legitimate question about “Spend Dat.” And I think she deserves and answer.

MTV somehow found room for 15 Song of Summer nominees without finding a place for her hit.

“Are we surprised???”

That was Miami’s reaction after MTV unveiled the category for the 2026 Video Music Awards. I understand the side eye as I gaze at the list.

MTV nominated Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Charli xcx, Ella Langley, KATSEYE, Latto featuring Doja Cat, Morgan Wallen, Olivia Dean, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, Slayyyter, SOMBR, Stella Lefty, Tame Impala and JENNIE, and Taylor Swift.

That is 15 songs.

No “Spend Dat.”

Spotify already put “Spend Dat” on its official Songs of Summer list for 2026. The song became a viral monster, the video surpassed 10 million YouTube views and Miami’s record inspired countless conversations across social media. It was not pretty and yet that is not the point.

“Spend Dat” caught considerable heat over lyrics that critics said glorified scamming and shoplifting. The backlash turned the record into something larger than a catchy song. It became another argument.

MTV is not talking yet. They are not saying that anything in particular case them to exclude this massive song. MTV simply announced its nominees and Miami was not among them. The category is described by MTV as recognizing the favorite summer 2026 hit, with the winner determined through fan voting. Miami won’t even get the opportunity.

Latto and Doja Cat made the cut with “Okayyy,” so Rap certainly was not locked out. I never heard that song, to be honest.

The internet does not have a sympathetic ear for her. Somebody said she was “only a ‘hit’ on social media.” I do not agree and yet, maybe? Others slayed her even more. They were mean! To be real, I do not know what the songs of the summer are/were. Spotify and them have the people fractured and broken to pieces. We have no unity in our listening habits.

Maybe “Spend Dat” was too controversial. Maybe MTV simply believed 15 other records had stronger summers. Maybe we should not care? And go listen to some real Hip-Hop? I dunno. They need to define the category better. Yeah, that.
