Roadblock Radio

Caribbean Radio in Connecticut

Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven and Waterbury listen online. The stream is free, it runs 24 hours, and it does not fade out between towns.

Online only in Connecticut. The stream, the apps and the smart speakers all carry the full broadcast.

Connecticut has one of the oldest West Indian populations in New England, and almost none of the radio to go with it. Roadblock Radio does not have a transmitter in the state and does not pretend to. What it has is a stream that reaches Hartford's North End as clearly as it reaches Brooklyn.

That turns out to matter more than a signal. There is no dial to hunt for on I-91, no static crossing into Bridgeport, and no hour of the day when the music stops. The full New York schedule plays through, so a Hartford listener gets Richie B in the morning and Culture Time at night on the same clock.

Open the stream in a browser, install the free app, or ask a smart speaker for Roadblock Radio.

What plays

Reggae

Roots, rocksteady, lovers rock and the singers carrying it now. Culture Time and Back To Basics are where the catalogue lives.

Dancehall

The current riddims and the ones that built them, mixed live by DJs who play the parties as well as the radio.

Soca

Trinidad, Barbados, Antigua and the whole carnival calendar. Island Vibez and Roadblock Island Mix run it every week.

Afrobeats

Lagos and Accra sitting next to Kingston and Port of Spain, the way they sit next to each other in a Caribbean party.

Reggaeton and Latin urban

DJ B19 takes Saturday evenings for the Latin urban hour, so the dial does not stop at the English-speaking Caribbean.

Talk and community

Community Connection on Sunday afternoons, and Wealth Mornings With Jen every weekday at noon.
